The Unavailability of Authorial Intent

Monroe C. Beardsley's unavailability argument is one of the most underrated anti‐intentionalist arguments in the philosophy of interpretation. The main idea of this argument is that, since independent evidence of authorial intent is normally unavailable, the literary interpreter should focus on what a text means rather than on what the author intends it to mean. In this article I propose a revised version of the argument to show that the unavailability of authorial intent suffices to make actual intentionalism untenable as a recommendation for finding out textual meaning.

本論文深入討論哲學家Monroe Beardsley所提出的不可得性論證。Beardsley用此論證來反駁真實意圖主義，此立場認為詮釋作品時應該訴諸作者意圖，但Beardsley認為作者意圖普遍不可得，因此意圖主義的主張難以成立。然而，此論證被Beardsley認為有重大漏洞而未再加以深究。本論文的創新之處在於提出一個不可得性論證的全新版本來證明真實意圖主義確實是一個難以成立的詮釋學立場。
